Our week and over 100 cockney gerbils

Friday, June 16, 2006

On Sunday I looked at my diary and thought 'great', nothing mcuh on, a few home checks etc I'll get some work done this week and maybe even have the chance to have a sit down in the evening. My work load is hideous and juggling our business with the rat rescue is hard.I thought this week would be easier.

No. The last three days have been spent sorting out some cockney rescued gerbils. We have some 50 gerbils (including two mums who ate 10 of their babies this morning - though som were still alive. Very distressing, plus lot of females due any minute now and another mum and new borns!) between myself and Jacky Carter at GBH.

They were rescued from a house in London and were living outside under a gazebo. In the recent rain downpour, the rain got in to their cages and we think that more than half of them drowned as originally we were asked if we could take 112. (The day before the downpour) The cages had two icnhes of water in the base of them according to the guy who organised the collection.

We have lots of lovely boys here ready to go to loving homes aged around 7 weeks up to probably juvenile or older. They are black, grey and albino.

We also have lots of sick ones - some even died on the way home. Some are in a terrible state.

We also took in a lveoly old rat chap who was surplus to the fmaily's requirements.

On a positive note, henry is doing well and putting on weight! And Iota is geting bigger too.

Hopefully next week will be a better week and I'll manage to get some work done and fit in a few meals and sleep!

Is Iota the most expensive Rat in history?

Little Iota - (the girl with the malocculsion) - she's been costing us £30-£50 a WEEK to have her teeth burred! We think she has another 8-12 weeks of teeth burring (at least another £500) then an op to remove her bottom incisors (£100) then another 8 weeks of burring (another £500) and then another op to remove the top incisors - £100!

We think she's going to cost us at least £1,400 over the next 8 months! Some people may say it is a crazy amount to spend on one rat, but she is not even 12 weeks old yet and she deserves a chance. If it was a child, you'd do the same.

Fingers crossed for her next burring session tomorrow!

The heat

Monday, June 12, 2006

The rats are really suffering in this heat. The ones here are currently munching on an ice cube each, bless them. We have rats in three rooms, and each room has an air cooler and a big fan in it to keep them cool. My office - I work from home - is like an oven, I am sitting here sweltering! But every time I buy a fan for this room, it ends up with the rat kids!

Henry is doing OK - I've just cooled him down with some lukewarm water. Today I saw a glimpse of the old Henry when I looked at him. I am keeping everything crossed for him after his last minor stroke on Friday.

Two new boys - George and Doug - are paddling in a shallow bowl of water and playing -it is so sweet to watch.

  About Us

The aim of our charity is not only to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome small animals, but to educate individuals and animal-related organisations on proper small animal healthcare and welfare. We regularly run successful campaigns to this effect

Our website provides details of unwanted, abandoned and abused small furries (such as degus, rabbits, hamsters, rats and guinea pigs) that need loving homes not just at this rescue but nationwide and also provides lots of useful articles and information.

Our five year plan is to build a dedicated rodent rescue sanctuary with fully qualified staff 24/7 and the facility to take in hundreds of 'small furries'.
