Henry Rat

Saturday, July 01, 2006

Sadly Henry, our brave, wise little rat who survived a stroke, went across the Rainbow Bridge today.

Back in May in had a stroke which he seemed to almost recover from - though he was never himself again. But this morning he had suffered yet another stroke and had difficulty breathing. We took him to our lovely vet and Henry has now joined his ratty friends over the Bridge.

We are all very sad as he was extra special.

Top Tip on keeping ratties cool

Friday, June 30, 2006

Well, the hot weather is back and we've just received a great tip from rat lover Tracey who says...

When ratties are suffering from the heat freezing fruit like grapes and blueberries helps cool them down and makes a nice, healthy treat - it's what I always gave my rats in hot weather.

To be honest, we have ever only used frozen peas before, as we really hadn't thought about using anything else, so am just about to pop a bunch of grapes in the freezer for the kids! Yum!

Bears, rats and gerbils

Wednesday, June 28, 2006

Am asking everyone we know if they can spare just £2? Not just to help the ratties at the Rescue here but to help another animal close to our heart - Bears.

Name The Bear competition..

First of all, many of us are unaware of the cruelty and abuse that happens to Bears around the world. In conjunction with WSPA (the World Society for the Protection of Animals) we are running a Name The Bear competition. For just £1 you get the chance to win a cuddly Teddy Bear and your money goes to WSPA to help save the bears.

See here for more details..

CavyRescue Fund Raising events

Secondly, we have three CavyRescue fund raising events coming up over the next few months.

In July, Beri Instone from London will be walking 100 miles across the South Downs Way with some friends, starting on the 8 of July at Winchester.

On August 13 we will be at the NCD Fun Day in Chestfield, Kent promoting the Rescue and selling donated goods and new products.

Finally, on 3 September, Colin Dalglish from Glasgow will be running a half-marathon in aid of CavyRescue in the Great Scottish Run.

Beri, Colin and his wife Karen have rats of their own who they are devoted to and wanted to do their bit by helping the rats and other furries here at CavyRescue.

If you wish to sponsor Beri, Colin or make a donation to CavyRescue, even a pound makes a huge difference.

Please click on the PayPal button at the foot of this page: http://www.cavyrescue.co.uk/fundraising.shtml

Or cheques can be sent to the address also on the page.

Many, many thanks

Stella

Gerbils, Henry, Chelsea the cat....

Sunday, June 25, 2006

Its been another hard and sad week here at the Rescue. First of all, poor Chelsea, our resuce cat who has been with us for 6 months and was ill, was put to sleep. It was the right thing to do but so sad. This leaves us with two cats - Max and Kirby, both 8 years old. Over the last year we have lost four cats to illness. They were all old, unwanted rescues and had health problems, but it doesn't make it easier. It has been so emotionally draining.

We are trying to rehome the gerbils that are well and able to go - but no takers yet.It is so sad as they are so friendly - they come and sit on your hand and are so inquisitive.

What makes it worse that the woman who they were taken from just dumped them outside yet she must have handled them regularly. How can you play and lvoe something and then just dump them? Sadly this is what we see a lot of. You would not believe what some people do to their animals, it is horrific.

Henry did pick up in the week - he put on weight and was acting more like his old self. We were so happy. Sadly, the last few days he has gone downhill.

Iota had her teeth burred again and is doing fine and Sasha - one of her cagemates - was x-rayed as she has not been well. We are planning to have more tests done, this time for diabetes.

What a week!

  About Us

The aim of our charity is not only to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome small animals, but to educate individuals and animal-related organisations on proper small animal healthcare and welfare. We regularly run successful campaigns to this effect

Our website provides details of unwanted, abandoned and abused small furries (such as degus, rabbits, hamsters, rats and guinea pigs) that need loving homes not just at this rescue but nationwide and also provides lots of useful articles and information.

Our five year plan is to build a dedicated rodent rescue sanctuary with fully qualified staff 24/7 and the facility to take in hundreds of 'small furries'.
