Runner to run a rat race fund raiser

Thursday, August 17, 2006

Glasgow man, Colin Dalglish, from Corkerhill will be running a half-marathon for rats in this years Great Scottish Run - and is looking for sponsors.

Colin (40) will be running in aid of CavyRescue – the UK’s first dedicated rodent rescue - on Sunday September 3rd - with wife Karen in the crowd supporting him.

Colin and Karen have rats of their own who they are devoted to and wanted to do their bit by helping the rats and other furries at the charity’s rescue centre.

Colin says: “'I’d always quite fancied keeping rats (more intelligent and friendlier than hamsters), but it wasn't until we got married that I got a couple - Salt and Pepper. From then on it was a slippery slope involving bigger cages (ferret cages have loads of room and space to climb) and more rats.

“Our latest addition to the family is Ben – a rescue rat. Ben doesn't seem to like other rats, so he has his own little penthouse, and gets out a lot to get handled. He's got a great wee personality and doesn't chew furniture, and seems to like watching TV!”

Colin adds: “Rats get such a bad press and this makes fund raising particularly difficult for the charities who rescue, rehabilitate and rehome them. That is why we decided to help CavyRescue - not only to raise them much needed funds, but to raise awareness of what wonderful companions rats make.”

On the day, Colin will be cheered on in the crowd by Karen who will be wearing a CavyRescue T-shirt. So, if you are going along to support, look out for Karen and give Colin an extra big cheer!

If you would like to sponsor Colin running this half marathon, please send a cheque made payable to CavyRescue to: PO Box 532, Rochester, Kent, ME1 9AT (please write “Glasgow Run” on the back of the cheque) or you can donate online at: www.cavyrescue.co.uk

Desperately seeking rat loving eccentric millionaire!

Sunday, August 13, 2006

CavyRescue - the UK's first dedicated rodent rescue - are desperately seeking an affluent rodent lover to help them attain the Charity's goal of constructing a small animal hospital and rescue centre.

The Kent-based charity - which has rescued, rehabiltated and rehomed over 2,600 'small furries' since its formation in 1999 - has now run out of space and resources. It has desperately been fund-raising to get the money needed to build new premises - and a solvent rat loving sponsor seems to be the only solution!

Stella Hulott, co-founder of CavyRescue, says: "Fund-raising for a small animal charity is difficult as sadly, 95% of the general public see small animals as disposable and do not the see the value of rescuing and rehoming. And for rescues - who are permanently short of space for these furries - we will soon be unable to help all these animals as the problem grows.

"As more and more homes are being built in the Kent area, the number of unwanted and abandoned small pets will only increase. By building a dedicated rescue centre with an on-site small animal hospital we hope to be able to meet the current need and also grow in the future."

Stella adds: "To generate enough funds through current public donations would take us over fifty years! There are 1.96 million rodent owning households in the UK*. If each household gave just 50p to the charity, it would raise the funds needed. However, as that is unlikely to happen, the best we can hope for is a rodent loving millionaire to help us out!"

Join us at the Fun Day!

Rats and dogs! Charities make for family fun day

CavyRescue – the Kent based charity for small ‘furries’ – will be having a stall at the Dogs Trust Canterbury annual Fun Day on Monday 28thAugust – and want you to stop by and visit their stall to help them raise much needed funds.

The UK’s first dedicated rat rescue charity, who rescue, rehabilitate and rehome rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters and rats etc will be selling at trade prices and raffling off a range of pet products such as cages, food and accessories as well as giving out invaluable information and advice on pet healthcare and welfare.

Stella Hulott from CavyRescue says: “Attending such a high profile event as the Dogs Trust Canterbury Fun Day is a great way for us to raise awareness of CavyRescue as well as raise funds for our planned small animal hospital and sanctuary.”

The Dogs Trust event – which also will have a Fun Dog Show - runs from 11.00am until 4.00pm in the field opposite the Rehoming Centre on Radfall Road, Chestfield, near Whitstable, Kent CT5 3ER. Entrance to the event is only £1.00 for adults, 50p for under 16s/OAPs, and dogs go free! Parking is also free.

Sarah-Jane Honeywell from CBeebies Tikkabilla will be part of the judging panel for the charities Fun Dog Show.

Lizzie Reffell, Dogs Trust Canterbury Rehoming Centre Manager, comments: “We can promise a great day out for all the family whether they have two legs, or four! There will be all sorts of activities to keep everyone occupied and amused – there will definitely be something for everyone at Dogs Trust Canterbury’s Fun Day!”

Stella agrees; “Not only will this be a fun day for everyone whether they are two legged or four legged but it will raise funds to help abandoned and abused animals in the Kent area.”

Latest PR: Rodent rescue seeks homes for Bob, Ron and 100 other gerbils

CavyRescue - the Kent based rodent rescue - are asking gerbils lovers to step forward and give a home to some of their recent new arrivals. Along with several other rescues, they recently took in over one hundred gerbils from a house in Barking, Essex and now some are fit enough to find loving homes.

Stella Hulott, co-founder of CavyRescue, says: "These gerbils were rescued from appalling conditions and are now looking for genuine, caring homes in the Kent area. Many of the gerbils are too sick to rehome currently, and there are many pregnant females. However, we do have many lovely, friendly furries here desperate and ready for a great new home".

Among the gerbils - most of whom have stumpy tails, ripped ears and toes missing - who are ready to find new homes are:

Kerry, Geri and Terri - three young black females with stumpy tails to go together
Gary, Mark, Howard, Robbie and Jason - five cream males with pink eyes - to go as a group or as a two and a three
Bob and Ron - two young agouti males to go together
All are incredibly friendly and need good, secure homes and all potential new homes will be home checked.

Stella adds: "We hope that gerbil lovers in the area will be able to offer some of these sad and scruffy furries a new and happier life".

  About Us

The aim of our charity is not only to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome small animals, but to educate individuals and animal-related organisations on proper small animal healthcare and welfare. We regularly run successful campaigns to this effect

Our website provides details of unwanted, abandoned and abused small furries (such as degus, rabbits, hamsters, rats and guinea pigs) that need loving homes not just at this rescue but nationwide and also provides lots of useful articles and information.

Our five year plan is to build a dedicated rodent rescue sanctuary with fully qualified staff 24/7 and the facility to take in hundreds of 'small furries'.
