Hard monthSaturday, August 26, 2006We look after rats for people when they go away as a favour and sadly seven out of the nine that came in have been very ill. Two were put to sleep almost as soon as they came in and we have had endless trips to the vets and lots of heartbreak. AS we have enough sick rats here already and have a hard time juggling the Rescue with our full time jobs, the pressure this has added to us has been immense. We have also lost two fairly young bucks - permanent residents - both to pituary tumours in just two weeks and have two girls with huge tumours for who it is just a matter of time. People think that becasue we are a registered charity, we are huge, like the RSPCA. There is just the two us, with no financial or voluntary assistance whatsoever. We get emails every day from people who think we are the answer to their problems whether they have an animal they want us to take from them or there is a stray cat locla to them that we are worried about. Most of the time we are not local and we put them in touch with organisations local to them. Most of the time they do not bother to contact them. I then lay awake worrying at night about the animals. People also do not take resposibility for their animals, asking our help and advice -which we happily give - only for them expect us to do things for them. You then get the people who tell you what a great job you are doing -which is great -then take the pee by adding further pressure to you by not follwoing our advice. We then have to sort the problems out for them. After seven years of this, I am sick to death of people. And its not just the cruel ones - even the ones who think they are whiter than white and love their animals then just take the pee out of us by continually ignoring our help or not following through our suggestions. Poeple think we are a substitute for vets. They think that because we have around 5 - 10 rats put to sleep every month, we are immune to it. We are not. Infact, each time we have to do it, it gets worse. RIP Bash, Doyle, Brickie, Waffle, Ruby - ratties lost in the last few weeks Posted by : Jason Hulott @ Saturday, August 26, 2006 |
